Max badly injured, in the jaws of Manticore - this was the dramatic finale of the first season. With the help of Joshua, the "prototype" of a previous Manticore test series, and the inscrutable Alec (X5-494), Max succeeds again in escaping the gene laboratory. A short pleasure only, Max unintentionally infects Logan with a deadly virus that has been implanted into her by Manticore for only this reason. Meanwhile director Renfro issues the order to destroy Manticore, because "Eyes Only" exposed its machinations. Max returns to Manticore to get an antidote for Logan - just in time to save her transgenetic brothers and sisters from certain death...

The scenario of the second season fundamentally differs from the first season in which Max permanently had to hide her true identity and origin searching her siblings and her place in the world. In contrast, the existance of transgenics is publicly known now and in a way Max becomes the leader of all the laboratory-bred creatures that escaped Manticore now trying to find their way in society. Since normal humans reject the exotic creatures, they often need Max' help. Thus, they are forced to live in the contaminated urban district "Terminal City" while the negative public mood against them is fomented. As their protector, Max tries to permit them a normal equal life.

After the destruction of Manticore, Max is confronted with an even more deadly enemy in the second season: An ancient "breeding cult" that already has infiltrated many levels of society. Over centuries, this secret cult has succeeded in breeding superhumans that are at least equal to the genetically improved soldiers of Manticore. Now, this cult, and especially the scrupulous agent White, tries to wipe out all remains of Manticore, including the transgenetic survivors, for unknown reason. Later it is revealed that a defector of this cult, the so-called "Sandeman", was responsible for founding Manticore. He was also significantly involved in creating Max as the "perfect being" so that she could stop the cult one day... (However, the TV series was canceled before this new plot twist could be elaborated. This was later done in the second and third novel, concluding the plot of the series.)

Moreover, Max' life is made miserable and her love relationship to Logan is heavily stressed by a Manticore virus that was designed to kill Logan and that is carried by her. Thus, Max must not even touch Logan. While both refuse to give up hope for a cure, Max unfortunately finds a pretty competitor in Asha who starts flirting with Logan...
